Description.

Shillong-The Scotland of East is a hill station in the north-eastern part of India. The picturesque views, beautiful gardens, royal lawns, one of the largest golf-course and the wettest weather drew the attention of tourist to this capital city of Meghalaya throughout the year. The city is situated at an average altitude of 4,908 feet above sea level, with the highest point being Shillong Peak at 6,449 feet is also a famous destination in Shillong. The British legacy is still visible in the architecture and food habits of the population. Most of the Shillong population belong to the Khasi tribe, who are predominantly Christian. There are significant Assamese, Bengali and Nepali minorities. An interesting aspect of Khasi’s are that they are a Matrilineal Society- the mother's surname is passed on to the children and the youngest daughter inherits the ancestral property. The head of the family and clan is still the man and the system functions only to protect women from discrimination. This city is also known for the manicured gardens at Lady Hydari Park, walking trails of Ward’s Lake, the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures features displays on the region’s native people, Elephant Falls, etc.
